This month alone, a record was broken for the longest tennis match, a mind-blowing 11 hours and 5 minutes. The record was also recently broken for the world’s largest salad, weighing in at 29,579 pounds. (No word on the salad dressing.)

But another, nerdier record, was shattered this week when six Dutch video game players went on a 50-hour, or 3,000 minutes, gaming marathon to break the Guinness World Record for longest period of time playing a video game.

The previous record was set last year by Chirantan Patnaik, an Indian gamer who played for 40 hours and 20 minutes.

The new world champions, who are probably sleeping right now, played the game Red Dead Redemption, a first-person cowboy game set in the early 1900s, for more than two days. The gamers played on Sony PlayStation 3 and used a special power docking station, TwistDock, to keep their video game controllers charged during their record-breaking exertions.

During the game, the players were allowed to take a 10-minute break every hour for humanitarian purposes — to use the restroom and eat.

The players were originally competing with each other to break the previous world record, but decided to band together to pass the milestone together. As a result, the six players shared a cash prize and the publication of their names in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The six winning gamers are Sven de Vries, Renzo Bos, Robbie van Eijkeren, Marcel van Waardenburg and Edward and Maykel Leest, who are brothers.

Armor Abilities

Armor has multi-use augmentations that can alter any engagement on the fly. Armor Abilities aren’t discarded or deployed onto the battlefield, but rather activated for short durations and subsequently recharged during a short cool down phase. Below, you’ll find the short list of armor abilities that have already been declassified.

* Sprint – Feel the need? Engage this Ability for a burst of speed that’s great for quickly covering ground or escaping sticky situations.

* Active Camouflage – Go off the grid by engaging Active Camo. Your enemies can’t kill what they cannot see. Stalk, seek, and destroy.

* Jet Pack – Fly like a bird. Target your opponents. Laugh maniacally.

Zero Point Software invites gamers from all over the world to get immersed even deeper into the story, world and gameplay of the Interstellar Marines games, currently in development. In Running Man players take part of a select group of Special Forces secretly being trained as first line of defense against other sentient species.

Deep inside an underground military facility and under the supervision of Drill-Sergeant Barry, players will engage in a series of grueling training programs and fight high-tech Combat Training Robots specially designed for fast paced close quarter combat training. “In our previous slice, Bullseye, players were confined to a small military shooting range filled with simple cardboard targets. This time players will experience complete freedom of movement and they will need to move fast to survive the waves of charging Training Robots.

At the same time Running Man sets a series of events in motion, that eventually will lead to the revelation of the back story of the Interstellar Marines trilogy”, says Kim Haar Jørgensen, Game Director, Zero Point Software.

Play Interstellar Marines: Running Man here: http://www.interstellarmarines.com/game/running-man/

For access to the full experience or further information feel free to contact me. Interstellar Marines: Running Man – Release trailer: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclusive-running-interstellar-marines/701453

About Interstellar Marines: Interstellar Marines is a trilogy of games, an AAA first person shooter experienced in a realistic and unpredictable future where first contact with another sentient species is slowly becoming reality. The games balances the military realism and cooperative action from tactical shooters with the character development and narrative depth of Role Playing Games.

What really sets Interstellar Marines apart from other AAA titles is the players involvement in the creation. With Interstellar Marines the players isn’t just playing the games – They have the ability to improve the games as well. By joining the community on InterstellarMarines.com players can provide feedback on everything from level design to difficulty level, or maybe even get a speaking role in the games.

“We scan the forums for feedback every day and the games is already filled with small tweaks and changes based on the feedback from the community. Our weapon reload is a small example of this; the entire animation was remade because a community member pointed out that holding the finger on the trigger during reloads was unrealistic”, says Kim Haar Jørgensen.

About AAA Indie: Interstellar Marines is developed and published independently without the financial support and restrictions from any of the big publishers. During development a number of playable slices will be released online for everybody to try in a limited free version and only available on InterstellarMarines.com.

Players can completely unlock a given slice by purchasing a $5 Support Medal. Players signing up for the $25 Frontline account get complete access to all current and future slices as well as a digital copy of the first game in the trilogy, when it is released on PC and Mac.

Finally players can go full circle and purchase the limited edition $39 Spearhead account (only 75.000 available) which besides all the Frontliner benefits secures members with all three games in the trilogy at a very attractive price.

When the movie the Kraken was released, Liam Neeson released the Kraken in late March which the game was originally based on. But the digital version of the Kraken sea monster had some serious delays. It took until May for the game to get released in Europe. The game that is, not the Kraken! So here’s a sneak peek into the Clash of the Titans video game.

If you played the God of War series on PS3 you have a pretty good idea of how the game plays. Both games are third-person action games with Greek mythology themes, but Clash of the Titans is not as bloody as the famous Kratos and its a bit different in style of action with more strategic game play then the all-out blood-lust of God of War. The game has more of what it calls sub-weapons, which are the secondary weapons you can steal from your enemies and use against them. Just about all of the game’s enemies have weaknesses against certain weapons and attacks, so if you use the right tool in any given situation you can find the weaknesses of each enemy during combat.

You start off penniless as Perseus, who is from a small fishing village on the coast. Some sirens start attacking the village and Perseus takes to his weapons to defend himself and the village. Things get wilder after that. When Perseus isn’t skeletons, fighting harpies or other wild creatures, he’s getting chewed-out by a pissed-off Hades, who drops into the game occasionally looking like he’s about to explode with anger. One of the game’s strongest points is the creature roster that keeps appearing out of nowhere into the game.

All those monsters means there is a sub-weapons to get your hands on to defeat them. Giant hammers with a skull at the end, bows and arrows, and a strange looking harpy wing that does wind damage. A standard sword is with you at during the whole game, but the sub-weapons are powered by enemy souls, represented by a gauge on the screen. Each attack drains the gauge and you can refill it by stealing new weapons or doing a special soul-stealing move on weakened foes. Be careful how you use the sub-weapons. There’s definitely a risk-versus-reward dynamic at play with the decision to use up your special weapon on a big group of low-powered enemies or save it for a single big monster.

To steal sub-weapons you hit a button in time with a large circle shrinking in time with a small circle. Two or three times per enemy should do the trick, but it got to be kind of a drag after a while. But, the finishing moves look awesome the first time you see them. Ripping the wings off of a harpy that was once tormenting you from up high is definitely a rewarding experience. Sometimes they look a little weird, like when you thrust your sword through the open space in a skeleton’s rib cage to kill it. But what do you expect from a skeleton?

So what about Clash of the Titans?

Cool Greek monsters. Fans of the movie would probably like the game but the fighting moves get a bit monotonous and drag the game down some. Visuals are very cool though and the sounds are impressive. All and all a fun game but I can’t see myself getting hooked on it.

Clash of the Titans trivia:

DID YOU KNOW

* Harry Hamlin, who starred as Perseus in the original “Clash of the Titans,” also provided the voice of the Greek hero in the “God of War II” video game.

* The memorable stop-motion animation of the original “Clash of the Titans” was the last work by special effects master Ray Harryhausen, who also animated “Jason and the Argonauts.”

* Although the kraken is portrayed as a titanic humanoid in “Clash of the Titans,” the monster is actually a legendary giant squid originating from Scandinavian mythology.

Frank Mir vs Lesnar is the ultimate rematch to play in UFC Undisputed 2010. If you didn’t see the match at UFC 100 in Las Vegas, NV., then here is the full fight video. Watch them fight and them go play UFC 2010 with Frank Mir vs Lesnar as the options.

After playing with these two once again on my screen, it felt just like being in the ring and even mimicked the fighting styles of both Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar. History re-living itself in a fighting video game.

Frank Mir vs Lesnar is more than just a fight, it’s a personal vendetta amongst two fighters that have a longstanding beef between them.

Mark Maddens’ interview on WXDX radio quotes Mir as saying, “A lot of individuals are so worried about being politically incorrect.” “I’d rather go ahead and say what’s on my mind than to sit there and come up with some PC ‘Oh, the guy is a great fighter and I have a lot of respect for him.’ If I don’t mean it, why is it even coming out of my mouth? Frank Mir vs Lesnar is a fight between true rivals.

Those comments are unfortunate, and they don’t reflect the honourable sportsmanship that Mir commonly espouses. Maybe Mir is just hyping the rivalry he has with Lesner but I think he’s taking it too far.

“He doesn’t like me and I can guarantee, you talk to anybody in my family, it’s a legitimate hate,” Mir said of Lesnar. “His very being bugs me just because I’ve seen a lot of children out there who look to athletes and martial artists as role models, and it just makes me cringe. I sit there and go, ‘Man, I lost to this guy the second time around and now people think that’s the way to be — be big, obnoxious and angry.’ That’s not right. We really don’t like each other at all. Everything I stand for he despises and dislikes, and I can tell you I truly do not like him as a person whatsoever.”

Mir gets emotional when talking about Lesnar but knows he need to stay on top physically to keep beating Lesnar. Since losing to Lesnar in July, Mir has building up his strenth and size with former World’s Strongest Man competitor Mark Philippi.

Mir said that forty pounds can make a huge difference between two athletes. Lesnar’s wrestling capability and size is a game changer. “I don’t know if I’ll ever be as strong as Brock Lesnar,” said Mir, “he seems to have pretty good genetics in that category — but I think I can close the gap.”

Mir is thinking about Lesnar so much when he should be getting his head in the game right in front of him with Shane Carwin. Actually, Mir calls Carwin a better version of Brock Lesnar.

Mir can’t seem to stop talking about killing Brock Lesnar even when he’s talking about someone else. When talking about Carwin, Mir said, “He poses the same threat as Brock does as far as his wrestling ability, but Carwin has knocked out several people now,” Mir said. “No one has made it past the first round with this guy.”

What more could you want as far as rivals go in a fighting game?

So go have a Frank Mir vs Lesnar Rematch of your own right now.

This game shows tons of promise as many of the wants from the masses were put into this game as players can straightaway do much more than last year’s version.

There is a lot of great, new stuff in UFC Undisputed 2010. To commence with, the sluggish reaction time of the 2009 game is absent. When locked in the prone and mid-hold positions the fighter are all pumped up and breathing hard as they battle to get the upper hand. You can nearly feel the burn as your arms strain to break free of a hold. The transition take-downs are more detailed and pronounced.

You can switch to southpaw by clicking the right joystick and the game has added additional front submissions, targeting systems, a reanimated clinch and fight animations.

The Famous Penn Arm Trap

Fighters can easily change fighting styles from Sambo to karate, Greco-Roman to Muay Thai and you can make your own self created styles as well.

Over 100 fighters are jam-packed into UFC 2010, giving the game a lot of fighting variations. Athletes take on a very photographic quality giving the player a feeling of fighting with a real fighter.

One suggestion I would make though is to resist the temptation to skip the Career Mode. In my excitement to get in the ring I glazed over that part of the game and wish I had not. The Career Mode plays a big part of your fighters success further into the game and has a big impact on your reputation with your fans and the media. Further into the game, I wanted to start over again from the beginning once I realized how important it was to my fighters success.

One more thing, this game is not for button mashers. You will not get anywhere at all until you take the time to learn the controls properly, but once you do the game takes on a whole new level of pure, fighting, blood-pumping, adrenaline. Don’t sell yourself short on learning the transitions and experiment with combos until you get it right and you’ll have a huge advantage over your opponents.

UFC Undisputed 2010 is without a doubt going to be one of the biggest selling games this year. I don’t want to sound like I’m hyping up this game too much but, with all the added features, UFC 2010 may have the potential to be one of the greatest fighting games ever made.

Fighting games are so popular these days that lots of websites offer them to be downloaded for a certain cost. On some sites, players can play right away online. Video game downloads online can be quite good these days.

Graphic quality in online downloaded games have reached the same level as games bought in a store. The conflict between purchased and downloaded games is raging into an all out war. Free games can now offer an consistently exciting experience to its players with the use of intelligently designed graphics, inventive artwork, and comparable special effects.

Due to this, online players no longer want to spend their hard earned cash to be able to play an exciting game since they are readily available online without the need to spend a dime. Video clips, special maps and tips, coupons and referral incentives are some of the ways that site owners are keeping their game site subscribers loyal and returning to the site. Sites are giving the video game players more and more reasons to keep coming back.

Exclusive games not found on other sites or consoles will always have their own following and guarantees loyalty to that game. Gaming consoles in my opinion, still offer the best graphics and playability for the money in the long run.

Though free video games have indeed won a lot of fans worldwide, it will still boil down to your personal preference on what kind of games you want. If your internet speed is fast enough and you like the games offered that may be the right option for you, but downloaded and store bought games are always playable even without your internet being connected.

Graphics are so much better on a dedicated console. If you don’t have and internet connection than gaming consoles are the only choice. Whichever fighting video game you like to play there will always be a platform available to choose from. Getting the most out of your fighting game experience is a talent that is learned with practice so just keep playing.

I say it’s time that we focus on what really matters. The Games. Who’s with me? You see I LOVE GAMING!!! I love walk-off homers and head-shots. I love drifting a turn at 100 miles an hour and lost battles with a six foot tall Greek God who may or may not be your father.

Gaming is having a ridiculously huge T.V. in a tiny one room apartment. It’s staying up until 3AM to win a trophy that isn’t real….BUT IS! And it’s girls that know the way to a man’s heart is through a melee attack. I love gaming and fighting video games in particular and I know you love it too, that’s why you’re here. And while millions of people are pretending to work while they watch E3 at their desk.

That’s why says Kevin Butler they made the PS3 Move, “So every person on this great blue marble can get a taste of the PS3 sugar. Families, kids, grand-parents, the new hardcore guys and even you.” He implored the crowd at the E3 2010 gathering to not hate on the new gamers that will be using the PS3 move. It will open gaming up to everyone and can even make a ten years old kid in Fresno can make a frat boy in Boston question his own manhood. We can all box using game characters that have important features like… arms and necks.

As the theme to Star Wars played in the background, Butler said,” When we said the PS3 move can do everything we meant it. The PS3 move brings a whole lot more everything to the table. Because every gamer is a real gamer. Motion Gamer, Hardcore Gamer, everyone. And though we may pledge fan boy allegiances to different flags, deep down inside we all serve one master, one king and his name is Gaming! Forever may he reign!”

There’s something about pitting your fighting skills against an opponent that really gets your adrenaline going. These days the graphics really offer the player an all encompassing experience. It’s come a long way since the first Atari games.

I imagine a day when the controller we use to play a fighting video game will be more realistic. I know that Modern Warfare 2 has new controller peripherals that look like combat equipment, just like Wii has their motion controller and boxing gloves. Some day in the future of fighting video games, we will be sparring live with other players in real time using real looking guns and we will experience total immersion in the video game arena. I look forward to that day but meanwhile, the realism of the fighting game experience is improving by leaps and bounds.

What are your favorite fighting video games and first-person shooter games? Add them to the comments of this post.

Here are some of my favorite fighting and shooter games out there to date:

1. Tekken 6

2. Mortal Combat 2

Now I know there are people who think that fighting video games and other violent video games cause unhealthy and violent behavior in children but I think that’s a bunch of hogwash. If anything, it allows people to release pent up frustrations. When we were kids we used to wrestle and play war games in the field behind our house and no one ever talked about that leading us to violence. Movies and sports are full of violence and I believe that there’s something about the nature of humans that attracts us to these kinds of activities. Fighting video games are another extension of this trait we have.

Game designer THQ’s been busy. With a new career mode, additional fighting styles and expanded controls, “Undisputed” plays like a gritty, macho chess match as fighters are capable of ducking, dodging and shifting their weight while grappling for advantageous position or the just-right angle for a knockout left hook.

This isn’t a game for button-mashers.

Fighters become realistically gassed when you strike too much, a strategy that also leaves you open for an easy counterattack. Miss with your third consecutive uppercut, and Anderson Silva will proceed to shatter your jaw with a merciless spinning back fist.

After catching a few initial lumps and playing the tutorial, I eventually learned the necessity of understanding fighters’ strengths and weaknesses, which are aplenty thanks to the more than 200 moves at your disposal.

If you get bored painting the octagon red with Silva’s smooth Brazilian jujitsu, you can always just coldcock light heavyweights with Chuck Liddell’s fearsome fists. Or command all 265 pounds of coverboy Brock Lesnar before grappling Greco-Roman style with Josh Koscheck. You genuinely start to feel for opponents as you wallop them into bloody messes thanks to the designers’ careful attention to facial anguish.

“Undisputed” is terrific for casual gamers because of its quick-to-start exhibition mode and online play.

For hardcore fans, the revamped UFC 2010 career mode is exhaustive, following your personally tailored character (I went for the knockout-scoring boxer) through a 12-year career filled with training, interviews and — eventually — title matches.

On the negative side, it does take a lot of time to adequately understand your arsenal of controls.

Pummeling and throwing from a grapple hold, specialty moves and just developing the proper sense of timing take a while, but the smoothness of game play and intricate attention to lighting, crowd and announcer reactions and the fighters’ appearances are all enough to keep you hooked as you learn.

All told, THQ’s written the book on mixed martial arts video gaming with “UFC Undisputed 2010.” Just be sure to leave the punches pixelated or to the professionals.

In the fifteen hours it took me to clear Red Dead Redemption’s expansive core campaign, the thing I found myself most surprised by was how consistently likable rough-and-tumble protagonist John Marston remained throughout. He’s a stark contrast to Red Harlow, the star of 2004’s Red Dead Revolver; that character was built in the mold of Clint Eastwood’s “Man With No Name” and rarely spouted an unnecessary syllable. Marston, on the other hand, shares more in common with Unforgiven’s tragic hero Bill Munney: he’s a family man who is unceremoniously thrust back into a past life he can’t leave behind. He’s one of a dying breed of sunset riders who are facing extinction and are doomed to go out in a hail of gunfire.

From the start of Redemption’s bullet-riddled narrative, Marston operates from the familiar gray moral zone native to all of Rockstar’s leading men. Forced to confront his past in order to save his future, Marston’s sweeping transition from bounty hunter to unlikely freedom fighter to, finally, grizzled relic in an endangered era makes for a captivating arc, and paints Marston as one of the more sympathetic antiheroes in recent memory. Marston’s confrontation with an America that doesn’t want nor need him brings to mind GTA IV’s Niko Bellic, but his desire to find a peaceful place for himself and his family makes Redemption’s yarn something familiar yet utterly unique. It kept me earnestly interested in the jaded cowboy’s quest for restitution long past the main story’s conclusion.

In typical Rockstar fashion, Redemption plays host to a motley crew of liars, outlaws, substance abusers, and would-be revolutionaries; each is a riff on classic Spaghetti Western tropes, but they’re well-rounded and interesting enough that they never feel contrived. Portrayed with cinematic precision, these saints and sinners breathe life into Redemption’s vast landscapes; they’re also excellent counterpoints to Marston’s lone wolf persona, serving as memorable foils and friends in the process. And even though Marston’s salvation frequently takes a backseat to the varied quandaries of these frontiersmen (and women), they’re engaging enough to make players want to see their stories through to their just end.

As diverse and memorable as Redemption’s cast is, however, it’s the game’s expansive open-world of New Austin that lifts the experience well above the latest crop of open-world sandboxes; it’s also the main reason why the “Grand Theft Cowpoke” comparisons are both irrelevant and inadequate. Swapping cars for tumbleweeds and skyscrapers for open ranges, Redemption’s frontier landscape effortlessly evolves from dusty plain to painted desert and back again, with all manner of rustlers, bandits, ranchers, and a menagerie of region-specific fauna breathing life into the land. I often passed on the option to quick-travel from camp or ride in a stagecoach taxi in favor of heading out on a trusty steed, as the genuine thrill of clopping through Redemption’s rich scenery offers up as much promise as the youthful portrait of America that it paints; from ad hoc hunting sessions to playing judge, jury, and oftentimes executioner to any number of randomly generated disputes, there is a lot to discover and do in the wild frontier. Helping matters is the fact that Red Dead Redemption is, by all measures, Rockstar’s best looking game to date; the game’s masterfully crafted and stunningly detailed environments are beautiful to look at, and thankfully don’t share Liberty City’s brown, muddy “realism” filter.

But what makes the treks across Redemption’s tumultuous terrain work so well is undoubtedly the game’s equine element. Horseback riding is expertly implemented, and brings an indisputable facet of authenticity to the title on par with so many silver screen serials and dime-store novels. It’s from atop horseback that players will spend the majority of Marston’s journey, and the satisfaction that comes with mastering a mount is well worth the strife that might come with first climbing into the saddle. Shooting while riding, for instance, or heading up your first cattle drive may take some practice, but the genuine thrill that these iconic activities offer make them both worthwhile and satisfying when they finally “click”.

Of course, because it is a Rockstar title, Redemption doesn’t completely stray from the company formula. While it strives to create its own legend, it still adheres to the open-world mission structure pioneered by Grand Theft Auto, with assorted letter-based waypoints serving as launch pads for any variety of optional and plot-progressing missions. These run the gamut from Rockstar staples like racing and playing cabby to more period-specific assignments like horse-breaking, saloon shootouts, or riding a posse on any number of ambushes. Gamers who had qualms with GTA’s reliance on secondary fetch missions will likely take issue with Marston’s recurring role of errand boy, but the sheer quality and unpredictable nature of the tasks at hand — not to mention the much needed inclusion of inter-mission checkpoints — helps make these side missions a rewarding diversion.

Redemption’s post-mission Honor system is also worth noting: a reputation scheme that, unlike Grand Theft Auto, which inherently assumed you’d be playing as a sociopath, allows Marston the opportunity to be recognized by society as either a respected law-abiding peacemaker or dreaded saint of killers. I chose the virtuous path for my initial playthrough, and used my reputation as an upstanding lawman to claim hefty store discounts and, on more than one occasion, get away with murder. The nature in which New Austin’s denizens interact with you as your percentage statistics tick higher only serves to compliment the in-depth world Rockstar has created, and while an occasional, “Well, if it isn’t the John Marston!” won’t single-handedly make Redemption a Game of the Year contender, it’s a nice feature, and one of several that makes Red Dead Redemption’s love letter to the Wild West well worth revisiting.

One of Redemption’s most notable aspects, and likely one of my favorite features, is the game’s superb audio design. Every boot step, quick draw, hoof clop, and gun shot drips with Wild Western authenticity, capturing the iconic essence of the lone outlaw in an unforgiving environment to a whip-cracking tee. Redemption’s soundtrack, skillfully composed by musicians Bill Elm and Woody Jackson, admirably channels Ennio Morricone’s work on Segio Leone’s classic Dollars trilogy, with finely assembled whistles, harmonicas, and trumpets subtly commanding the game’s onscreen action.

I was able to spend a considerable amount of time online with Redemption’s beefy multiplayer component as well, and I can safely say that the potential for plenty of Moonshine-swilling nights of deathmatch debauchery is most certainly there. Redemption’s online modes offers up a few variations on traditional multiplayer staples, with Shootout and Gang Shootout subbing for Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, and the gold-fueled Grab the Bag, Gold Rush, and Hold Your Own acting as alternatives to Capture the Flag. From the initial Mexican Standoff to the last lingering gunshot, Redemption’s multiplayer works remarkably well and only serves to complement and build on the title’s exquisite single player campaign.

However, I don’t feel that I can give a solid thumbs-up or down to Redemption’s most ambitious multiplayer feature; the Free Roam “lobbies”, which offer up the entire open-world of New Austin to sixteen players for posse-forming, gang-conquering action, is a brilliant concept, but it’s really up to the players to make the most of it. Still, the competitive multiplayer modes offer a lot of meat for gamers to feast on, and it’s actually Rockstar’s finest effort to open their worlds to online exploration to date.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Red Dead Redemption is such a terrific title. Rockstar is one of the most consistently creative and talented developers in the industry, and their commitment to excellence shows in each and every product. Although this is said of almost every single new Rockstar product, Red Dead Redemption is arguably their best effort to date, if only because it distills all of the lessons they’ve learned from their previous titles into an engaging, expansive, and enthralling world. But the best part of Rockstar’s open-world oater is its honest and open appreciation for the iconic Western genre; Its Wild West setting is memorable and stays true to established genre lore while still managing to add its own wrinkles and twists. It’s one of the most appealing game worlds I’ve experienced in my recent memory, and it holds enough thrills to keep you playing from the very first bullet to long after the ride off into the sunset.

PROS: Enormous, engaging world; expertly captures the look and feel of the Wild West; likable protagonist in John Marston, who boasts an interesting, worthwhile narrative
CONS: Errand missions can get a bit tiring; occasional pop-in.

If you know of any more please add them to the comments of this post.

Splinter Cell Cheats and Tips

Level select

Enter “!lamaudite!” as a name to unlock all levels. Note: You must enter a “!” before and after “lamaudite”.

Throw further

When you are throwing a can or a bottle, hold L to throw it harder and further.

Save ammunition

If you find a room being patrolled by a guard or worker, wait until he leaves, then turn off the light switch. When he returns, he will immediately move to the light switch to turn it on. At this point, his back should be turned to you. Quietly sneak up and either grab or punch him without firing your weapon.

Faster manual lockpick

When using the manual lockpick, instead of rotating it slowly as the game suggests, press the Analog-stick in one of the four diagonal corners, as the “rumble” will always be in one of those directions. This is much quicker.

Avoiding detection

Always try to stay in shadows or bushes; crouch when walking around; try to take someone hostage before shooting them; always try to use your night vision/thermo goggles just to check to see if there is anything to get around you; and drag bodies into dark corners.

Hiding

You cannot be seen when hiding in dark places. Shoot the lights to make it dark, but make sure that there are no guards around. Do not stay in the light too long.

Dropping down from high locations silently

If jumping at a place that is a long way down, you will probably die or get hurt. If there is a guard nearby, try to jump down on him so that he takes the damage. Note: You can go into the silent drop while hitting him, so nobody will hear him scream. If there are no guards nearby, go into the silent drop, and when you touch the ground, quickly hold Y (jump). If done correctly, you will only get about 25% of the damage that you would normally receive by such a drop. You can also land quieter by pressing B (Crouch) immediately before you hit the ground.

Retrieving Sticky Camera

To retrieve a Sticky Camera that is too high to reach, shoot it with the sniper rifle or the handgun. It will fall to the ground.

Knockouts with Sticky Cameras

Use the following trick to have essentially infinite ammunition for knocking out enemies. This does not work until after you have found the SC-20K and have Sticky Cameras. If you are close to an enemy and want to knock him out, shoot him in the head with a Sticky Camera. It will knock out your enemy, and you can then pick the camera up off of the ground. For a convenient attack on a guard or character without being noticed, fire a Sticky Camera (not a Diversion Camera) at your targets’ head. Due to gravity, aim slightly higher, near the top of the head or above it. This saves bullets, eliminates the risk of being seen, and you can pick up the cameras and use them again.

Flares

If you are pinned down by a turret, throw a flare across it. The turret will be distracted for a moment, which may be long enough for you to sneak behind it and disable it.

Useful objects

You can sometimes find glass bottles on the ground. If you find one, there are some things that you can do with it to save ammunition. Throw a bottle at a guard’s head, to knock them out. You can also throw them at lights, which can sometimes break them. Throw a bottle (or a can) into an area where a guard is located. This will cause the guard to looking around, which allows you to sneak into places without being seen. To throw a bottle or a can, pick one up and press X. Once you do that, aim with the dots and press R to throw it. You can throw farther and harder by holding L while doing all of this. You can also use objects such as a pop can or beer bottle to distract guards, lure them, or knock them out. Simply go over to it and press A to pick it up. To throw it, hold X to get an aimer (hold L if you want a stronger, longer shot), then press R to shoot. To hit someone with it, walk up or sneak up to them (either from the front or rear) and press R to smash it at them. To lure a guard, just throw it somewhere and they should come looking for whoever threw it.

Thermal goggle keypad readings

To read the heat signature on a keypad, you can either walk up to the keypad and look at it with the heat goggles on, use sniper mode at a distance with the heat goggles on, or activate the keypad and turn on your heat goggles there. The order of the buttons will be as follows, based on color: Deep Blue, Blue, Light Blue, Green, Light Green, Yellow, Orange, Red. For example, if you had a Deep Blue button at 1, a Light Green button at 3, a Light Blue button at 4, and a Orange-Ish Red button at 6, the code would be 1-4-3-6. This trick where you use your thermal goggles to read the code punched in by a guard is extremely useful, but only available in the second Chinese Embassy mission as the current temperature in the Embassy is low enough for you to notice a difference on the buttons that were pressed by the guard. The buttons go from a deep red color to a deep blue color. Look for the button that is slightly different from most of the other buttons. Then, look for a lighter blue button and so on. following green, yellow, orange and finally red.

Doors

Opening doors often triggers events that just waiting for a certain amount of time will not. For example, at the beginning of the Defense Ministry level, the first door you reach leads to a room with a security camera. When you use the optical cable, no other dangers are present. However, upon opening the door a guard opens the door across the room, which may make you panic and do something foolish. To prevent such events from occurring, use the Open Door Stealth feature. When you walk up to the door, hold A, press Left Analog-stick Down, and release A. You will open the door slightly. Next, press Left Analog-stick Down again to close the door. This will cause the scripted event (if any are set for that door) to go off. In the Defense Ministry example, doing this will get the guard to come in. Use the optical cable to see where he is. He walks behind a bookcase, then walks back to his desk. Once he sits down, open the door, crouch, walk slowly behind him, then whack or shoot him. Either leave him there or pick him up and drop him behind the bookcases. You can also grab him and knock him out behind the bookcase.

Blocking doors

If you have someone chasing you, run out a door, and when it closes, stand in front of the door for awhile. The guard will sometimes try to open it before he gives up. Note: The door must open towards you, and not towards the enemy. The game can crash sometimes when you do this. If the guard starts shooting at the door, you must open it quickly. Otherwise, the game will glitch and you will be invisible to the enemy and no event triggers will start.

Disabling Wall Mines

Slowly go up to a Wall Mine. It will flash red and green at an even pace. To disable this, you have to press Action when it flashes green. If it becomes red the instant before you press Action, it will explode. The way to always do this safely is to hold Action button when the “Disable Wall Mine” selection appears. Then, if it is green, release the button. If it is red on the screen, move the selection up to “Back To Game” and try again.

Shooting lights accurately

When you want to shoot out a light and need make it accurate, turn on your heat vision. You should be able to knock out the light faster and easier. You can also zoom up with the SC-20K after you have drawn it out by pressing Y. After that, you can also center the screen by holding L. You only have a limited time before it runs out. However, this is useful when you want to shoot lights very accurately.

Sniping with the SC-20K

When using the sniper mode of the SC-20K (press Y when it is equipped), you can hold L to make Sam hold his breath and aim more accurately. You can use this to clear out rooms or open areas from afar without letting anyone spot you. The safest way is to wait for a guard to stop in his tracks. Then, hold L, set the target on his head and take the shot. This is extremely helpful in the first few levels from when you pickup the SC-20K. However, when you get to the Abbatoir mission, you must be extremely careful as the guards can see you from a lot further, can see you in the shadows, and also have more powerful weapons. You must exercise extreme caution. From Abbatoir onwards, if there are multiple guards in the one room, your best choice of action is to use a smoke grenade, if they are bunched up. If not. then do not go in commando-style because the guards from here on out are much more powerful than in previous levels.

Escaping a room full of soldiers

Take a sticky camera or smoke grenades and throw it near where the most guards are located. For the sticky camera, a control bar that tells you how to make a noise or use smoke will appear at the bottom of the screen. Throw the smoke grenade and the smoke should knock out some guards. When the smoke appears from the grenade(s), it is your chance to run for it.

Knock out an enemy

To knock out an enemy without killing him, equip the sticky camera and shoot it at his head. Aim slightly above the head to compensate for gravity. After he is down, pick up the sticky camera and use it again. You can also throw bottles to knock out guards. You must aim and hit them in the head.

Taking out two guards

Shoot a sticky camera near the guard closest to you. When he approaches, use the gas to knock him out. The other guard will approach to investigate. You must either shoot him with a non lethal round if you cannot have casualties, or take him out with a head shot if killing is sanctioned. This has to be done correctly or he will revive the guard that you knocked out.

Eliminating guard threat without ammunition

If you do not have ammunition and you find two guards, sneak up to one and take him hostage. Make sure that your hostage is facing the other guard or he will shoot you. If you do not have ammunition, hide in the shadows and wait for a guard to come up to you (or slowly creep up to him) then press R. This will punch him. Use two punches to knock out someone.

Hiding bodies

After you have disposed of enemies in an area, make sure that you still hide them, even though no one is nearby. Before going to another checkpoint, the alarm may ring, and it will say that a body was found. Try to hide all bodies in hidden areas for best results.

Luring your enemy

To do this, find a can or glass bottle to pick up. Once obtained, move to a location, preferably dark. While hidden, throw the can or bottle to an open area with an enemy nearby. When thrown, the enemy will wonder what happened and walk towards that location. After you have drawn him out, you can take him out for an easy kill.

Splinter Cell Secrets

Secret Room

On the first level (training) there is a secret room above where you start. At the start look to your left. There is a ledge. You’ve got to get up there. Wall jump up there and goto the keypad and press: 5656. Walk in there into the secret room!! The way to figure that out is there is another ledge oppisite it. WAll jump up there and open the door into a storage room. Pick up the lock picks, go through the course untill you get to the gate you need to wall jump over. There is a locked door there, pick it and use the computer. It should give you a data stick and a note. Go back through the course and do the above!

Non-Lethal Bullet

If you find yourself running low on non-lethal bullets in your SC-20K, use the sticky camera at close-range to knock opponents unconcious. It’s on par with the ring airfoil round. The sticky camera can be picked up and used again.

Splinter Cell Glitches

Skip a Hard Battle in KolaCell (Server Room)

Note: KolaCell is available through downloadable content or a demo disc.

In the server room, after you access the computer and get the checkpoint, open your items menu with the black button after the Colonel starts talking. Keep it open until he is finished, then close the menu. Normally, 3 guards are supposed to come storming in, but if you do this trick they will not arrive! Also, in the hallway with the camera, the wallmine will not be there, so you don’t have to stop and disarm it.

Walk around in second Chinese Embassy level

This glitch lets you walk around in an area you’re not supposed to. This glitch requires near-perfect health, so don’t get shot at. Make your way through the restaurant, up the ladder, and across the makeshift wooden bridge. Take out the guy with the flashlight helmet, and proceed. Make your way to the zipline, but don’t zip down it. While on the balcony looking out, turn to your left. Jump on top of the box, then on top of the balcony railing. You should slide forward, turn around, and catch the railing automatically. Now shimmy over to roughly the middle of the railing, then hit down on the control stick to drop. Immediatly press and hold B. You should land with a small amount of health left. Explore this glitchy area, but don’t wonder too close to the building you were supposed to zip to or it’s misson failure.

Easy end to CIA HQ level

This will let you kill guards in the end of the CIA HQ level, where lethality has been restricted. When you have been ordered to kidnap Dougherty, go through the roof part like normal. You get a message ordering you to knock out a CIA security officer talking to your extraction team. As soon as you get this message, drop Dougherty to the ground and shoot him in the head with your SC-20K. The objective briefing will continue like normal and you will be able to shoot guards in the rest of the level, making the toughest part of this level a cinch.

Start a new game with any profile. On the balcony where the game starts, do not go into the palace’s room and instead, push in the left joystick and enter GREEN, BLUE, YELLOW, RED, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, RED (A, X, Y, B, Y, A, X, B).

Unlock Prince of Persia 2

To find this goodie, you’ll need to start from the Above the Baths save, once you have your new sword. Go down the stairwell that leads to a large carvernous area. After you make it through this area, you’ll end up in a small room with Farah. There’s a lever and gear in the center of the room. Turn it cockwise until it clicks twice. Both doors in the room are now closed, but you have also opened a secret door that you cannot see. Go to the wall directly opposite the entrance. Swing until you find a spot on the wall where your sword doesn’t spark. Strike this area a few times to reveal a hidden room. Enter to unlock the game, which is now available from the main menu.

Unlock Original Prince of Persia

Beat the game and Prince of Persia 1 becomes available in the Extra Features menu.

Unlockables

How to unlock the original Prince Of Persia

Around 33% of the way into the game, you will receive a new sword. Continue on until you break a wall and the Prince says, ”It’s said they built this palace on the ruins of another…” Once you cross the next room, you will find a rotatable switch. Directly behind this switch is a breakable wall, although it doesn’t appear to be one. If you hit it three times, you will find another room and you will receive a message informing you that Prince of Persia is now unlocked.

You can also rotate that switch until it points to the new room and it will open a gate that allows you to play Prince of Persia right there without having to exit back to the Extra Features screen.

Unlockable: Alternate Costumes

In the Extras menu, navigate to the Skin Manager and click on Redeem Code. Enter the following codes for the desired effect:

Xbox 360 allows two types of audio connections: analog and digital. Both analog and digital audio connections can give you surround sound or stereo sound, depending on the sound system that you use with your Xbox 360 console. Remember, your Xbox 360 audio setup applies to both games and DVD videos.

The Xbox 360 audio connection that you should use depends on the sound system that you connect to your Xbox 360 console:

Digital audio is the best option if you have both of the following:

• A sound system with a Toslink digital audio input

• A Toslink audio cable (which you can get from most stores that sell Toslink-equipped sound systems)

Toslink is the optical version of SPDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format) digital audio.

Analog audio is used for most TVs and inexpensive audio systems.

Digital Xbox 360 audio

You make an Xbox 360 digital audio connection by using an optical cable (called a Toslink). To connect your Xbox 360 to your stereo using a digital cable, follow these steps:

1. Make sure that you’re using one of the following Xbox 360 AV cables that connects digital audio:

• Component HD cable.

• Advanced Syndicat des Constructeurs d’Appareils Radiorécepteurs et Téléviseurs (SCART) cable (United Kingdom).

• VGA cable.

• S-Video cable.

• S-Video is the only standard TV cable that works with digital audio.

2. Connect a Toslink cable to the connecting plug of your AV cable.

Turn the stereo volume down before you connect the cable.

3. Plug the Toslink cable into your receiver.

The manufacturer sometimes covers this input to prevent dust from damaging the input. Check your input; it may be covered by either of the following:

• A plastic shutter that moves automatically when you plug the connector in

• A small square-shaped plug in the input

• If the input has a plug, pull it out now.

4. Switch your receiver to the digital audio source.

5. Fire up the Xbox 360 and pick the appropriate output type in the System blade.

Analog Xbox 360 audio

You make the analog audio connection with a pair of RCA jacks. The two analog audio connections are usually two different colors:

Red for the right channel

White for the left channel

This has been the standard connection method since before the original Atari game console was released.

Don’t have an optical input? Use analog audio and hook up with the RCA cables.

If you can’t use an optical input, you have two ways to make an analogaudio connection from your Xbox 360:

Directly to the audio system

(receiver):

Connecting directly to the stereo system may improve sound quality a bit. Analog audio usually sounds better when you reduce the number of connections between the signal’s source and its destination.

Through the TV’s audio input and output to the audio system:

Extra connections may hurt the sound quality a little. Your TV set can automatically send the matching audio to your sound system when you change video sources (such as satellite boxes and VCRs).

Many TVs that have audio outputs have two options:

• Variable output: Adjusts its output volume based on the volume setting on the TV (and the TV remote control)

• Fixed output (sometimes called “audio out” or “line out”): Volume is not adjustable with the TV remote control

Analog output

If you use analog Xbox 360 audio output

, you can choose between two types of output:

Mono (single-speaker sound)

Dolby Pro Logic II, which works with most analog sound systems:

• Standard stereo TV sound systems

• Two-speaker stereo sound systems

• Simulatedsurround sound systems (such as Dolby Virtual Surround and SRS TruSurround)

• Dolby Pro Logic surround sound

• Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1 surround sound

• “.1″surround sound systems, like Dolby Pro Logic II, can use a subwoofer.

Mono output

Mono puts all the game sounds through bothXbox 360 analog audio jacks (red and white).

Mono sound technology

When you use mono, it doesn’t matter which Xbox 360 audio jack you connect to your sound system. If your TV sound system only has oneaudio jack (usually white), you may find that this the best connection.

If you use mono sound with a multispeaker sound system (like a stereo TV or a surround sound audio system), you can hear sound from all the speakers, but you can’t tell the directionof the sound:

If you’re connected to a stereoaudio system, Xbox 360 mono audio doesn’t tell you whether sounds are on your left or right.

If you’re connected to a surround soundaudio system, Xbox 360 mono audio doesn’t tell you whether:

• Sounds are behind or in front of you

• Sounds are on your left or right

Mono sound setup

If you need to use mono sound with your Xbox 360, follow these steps:

1. Open the System blade of the Xbox 360 Dashboard.

2. Select Console Settings and press the A button.

3. Pick the Audio option.

4. Pick the Analog Output option.

Under Analog Output, you have two choices (as you can see in Figure 1):

• Mono

• Dolby Pro Logic II

Figure 1: You have only two options for analog output, Mono or Dolby Pro Logic II.

5. Select Mono and press the A button.

Dolby Pro Logic II output

You may find Dolby Pro Logic II the best analog audio setting if your sound system has:

More than one analog audio input channel.

You usually have a red input jack and a whiteinput jack.

More than one speaker.

At a loss as to where your next bout of moral muddling might be emanating from? Look no further. A spy has emerged from the shadows and he’s in possession of some vital intel for RPG fans… meet agent Michael Thorton, and enter the murky world of Alpha Protocol released June 1st 2010.

Best described as an action-RPG, Alpha Protocol is a quiet revelation – delivering dynamic shooting, insane levels of customization and a thumping near-future dose of espionage and sinister conspiracy – where the bad guys are occasionally good, the good guys invariably bad and everyone else is hovering somewhere in between.

As far as the talky stuff goes, instead of traditionally responding via various dialogue options, Thorton is instead able to mould conversations via aggressive, professional, suave or cocky replies. It’s a decent enough system, but a bit vague and Mike sometimes comes across as borderline schizophrenic.

Granted, Obsidian may not be the best when it comes to graphic engines, but when it comes to dialogue this team pulls out all the stops. There’s no black and white here – just so many shades of grey, which means learning to trust your gut becomes vital. Then, when the often dramatic consequences unfold, you genuinely feel it was your actions that shaped them. Cause and effect, baby.

GET SMART

Despite Thorton’s rather weedy, campy player model (more Maxwell Smart than Jason Bourne) you will feel like a super spy at times – especially when ‘using the shower’ in your dilapidated Taipei safehouse operates a lift that transports you down into what can only be described as Thorton’s Batcave – complete with high-powered motorbike tunnel exit! Here you’ll indulge in intelligence gathering, liaising with your handlers, experimenting with facial hair and even some email flirting.

THAT’S JUST UNREAL
The shooting’s nowhere near as slick as that other Unreal Engine-powered RPG fave, Mass Effect 2, but it’s more gratifying and multifaceted. As Thorton levels ups and develops his weapons specialities/perks the initially frustrating: ‘I’m shooting this goon repeatedly in the face, but he’s not actually taking any damage’ routine fades to black and combat becomes very exciting indeed.

There are more than a handful of exceptionally fun shootouts – and most levels are labyrinthine, offering plenty of opportunity to flank (and be flanked!), loads of goodies to pick up and bonus objectives to achieve.

Alpha Protocol’s a technical turkey but it’s also a gripping, innovative and deserving of both success and a sequel. It might look like a dog, but dig deep and you’re in for an undercover treat – it’s a stonking feeling when a game we were expecting to stink turns out to be a revelation. If you’ve any interest in RPGs that also deliver explosive action, don’t let this double agent slip through the net.

No game took an emerging sport to the mainstream in its first edition like UFC 2009 Undisputed did last year. But once you join sports gaming’s A-list, even in your rookie year, you have to start making sequels.

THQ, known for delivering annually on the WWE Smackdown series, poured development into UFC Undisputed 2010 to deliver a second game with mixed martial arts’ top stars and branding, and cement its position as the definitive MMA publisher, since later this year it will no longer be the only one. By the fall, EA Sports will enter into this high-growth market.

For now, THQ must follow its own act, and learn how title defense can be tougher than taking the first one.

Loved
In the Attack: UFC Undisputed 2010 is an excellent dissipator of aggression. Strikes, especially the fist strikes, have a very satisfying impact when they land cleanly, speaking highly of game mechanics connected to the violence you wreak. This year’s game adds new cage interaction animations, providing a greater sense of yeah-got-him-now in your clinching strikes – or if you manage to pound your opponent into the chain-link. Ground-and-pound mechanics are just as breathtaking in their raw brutality. The game maintains what made its predecessor such a breakout hit with crossover appeal to fighting and sports genres – the chance to hit someone as hard as you can, as often as you can and finish a fight with unilateral violence. Its basis in a real sport provides a thrill of victory different from that of arcade fighters tied to super powers and special moves. UFC Undisputed 2010’s physicality has a very seductive appeal to it – especially for those who like it rough.

Let’s Call This a Career: While I’m not a devotee of MMA, I know that the up-from-nothing story – for both the fighters and the sport – is its emotional fulcrum. UFC Undisputed 2010 Career Mode delivers a total story by placing your created fighter in situations beyond bouts and attribute-generation. Interviews aren’t an interstitial diversion; the game invites you to make respectful or disrespectful comments about your opponents, with lasting consequences flowing from that, in both your fighter’s credibility and popularity attributes and how the fans and commentary react to you. Career mode has been lengthened by five years to 12, and now includes an amateur preamble, allowing your fighter to test his strengths against the game’s four difficulties before picking one and turning pro. Reviewing UFC Undisputed 2010 I had to hustle through a lot of this mode, but even now I want to return to it – to do it right – and tell my story to a sport I hadn’t really thought about before.

It’s Showtime: Mixed martial arts is a made-for-television spectacle and UFC Undisputed is a very worthy video game companion, from the broadcast quality openings through the ring introductions, helmed by the authoritatively suave Bruce Buffer. Announcers Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg occasionally talk over one another or mis-apply a comment (a weak or measuring strike called a powerful one), but their pre-match commentary is outstanding, and in tournament or career modes they’ll even identify the tactics you used to win past matches. Replays remain a weakness, but a forgivable one, given the difficulty of identifying key moments other than a knockout. Still, at the end of a grueling round, or fight, there is plenty of satisfaction in feeling like you are participating in more than just a match, but in something to be watched, which entertains you on two different levels.

Controls – on the PS3: This game is a handful, moving nearly every body movement – positioning, running, a new swaying system, transitions, reversals – to the right analog stick, with the intent of a player popping out of one move and into another. In clinches or on the ground, the designers’ intent is for you to hit that a-ha moment and instinctively feel how to position yourself, open your foe’s defense, and hammer him into the canvas or cage. If I had those moments it was on the PlayStation 3’s DualShock, whose analog sticks are better suited than the Xbox 360’s to subtle position changes without overwinding them. But a visit to the practice cage is definitely in order, to get a sense of how the controls should feel when properly executed. In the heat of the moment, you’re probably not going to learn.

Stylish Fighting: I can’t credibly address the realism of the actual fighters’ moves and behaviors, or the appearance and effect of the techniques themselves. I can, however, say that this game offers a staggering diversity of combat styles that, combined with an a la carte assigning system, allows for the creation of a truly unique fighter. The game helps novices by providing several MMA templates to start with – adding in karate, wrestling, sambo and other fighting styles. And training with other fight camps in career mode allows fighters of both persuasions to be introduced to methods and moves they may not have considered.

Online Fight Camps – In Theory: UFC Undisputed 2010 includes an Online Fight Camp mode that I’ll praise in theory, rather than by direct experience, because of how camps work and because of the game’s multiplayer connectivity issues (see below). Players may align with training camps, a good idea that shrewdly delivers some cooperative multiplayer aspects to a strongly competitive title. In camps, you spar together, share tips and advice via voice chat, and your fighting record is aggregated into the camp’s overall record.

You also get a nifty custom banner that appears behind you during your bout introduction, imparting some team pride when you’re off fighting by yourself. Unfortunately, you can only start a camp or be invited to one. There’s no option to create a publicly joinable camp. Of course THQ wants everyone in the enterprise to get along, but a straight novice isn’t going to do well as the leader of his own camp, and should be able to ask into one by some means other than begging a guy over voice chat. Still, cooperative multiplayer aspects in sports games are depressingly rare, and seeing a mixed martial arts game make the effort to include it deserves commendation.

Hated
Multiplayer’s Missed Connections: The Xbox 360 version has been beleaguered by online connectivity issues since the day of release, and Thursday evening they had only marginally gotten better. Linking up with the THQ servers poses problems for more than just multiplayer – if the console’s connected, the game will try to connect to a server before you are able to do anything in the main menu. (This is not a requirement to have an always-on Internet connection.) That creates some inscrutable and infuriatingly long load times, upwards of one minute, just to get to the game’s first screen.

Some people are also getting error messages at the UFC Online menu, saying their router’s NAT setting is not set to open. I spent an hour trying to figure out how to change that because the URL for troubleshooting this issue, supplied in THQ’s error message, was not even active until Thursday morning. Following THQ’s instructions I could find no error or setting that needed changing.

Forum threads in the UFC Community are seething with anger at connection problems and crippling lag, which seem to be influenced by geographic distance between the host fighter and his competitor. Finally, in prime time Thursday night I was able to connect to a ranked match, and saw the lag for myself, although it did improve somewhat as the bout wore on.

The good news? I had no trouble with multiplayer on the PS3 – connected to the same router and the same network, of course. There were some common and minor lag issues – I had a couple of fights go against me at a critical moment due to it. Still, it was nothing like the utter fiasco that is Xbox Live multiplayer with this game.

UFC Online: We’ve been over this before. But it’s a sick joke that, after the games community had to discover for itself – rather than through a forthright announcement by THQ – that multiplayer access would be limited by a one-use code, it was treated to a fundamentally misleading code redemption process and then, for Xbox 360 users, broken multiplayer. The implementation of all this reeks of last-minute panic and is a serious black mark against this game and the UFC and THQ brands.

No Defense: Can I talk about the gameplay for once? Sure. What frustrates me the most about UFC Undisputed 2010 is how disconnected it feels from its defensive move set and, to a lesser degree, the grappling. Defense is indispensable to winning at the higher difficulties of a combat sport, and leaning into the right analog many times produced no discernible result to me.

In clinching or pummeling, you’re given two basic gestures, major transitions and minor. Major is activated by dragging back at a 45 degree angle and winding up. Minor is accomplished by dragging straight back and winding up. I could never tell if I’d commanded the game to do what I want – or even what the hell difference a minor transition made as opposed to a major one – mostly because the difference in gestures is subtle and executing one properly requires some deliberation that many forget in an urgent situation.

Defending takedowns and against your opponents transitions requires holding the stick in one direction or the other. Timing them for a reversal also felt disconnected. These actions would feel much more definite if they were mapped to buttons – and the button-based brute force escape from the mat is gone from this game.

The one part of defense I didn’t have a problem with was blocking strikes – because that was mapped to the right bumper and trigger. I can take getting my ass kicked in this game or any other, but I need to know it’s because I made a poor decision or neglected some critical aspect of strategy. The right analog makes it hard to tell if I’m even doing what I’m supposed to. Worse, you’ll encounter plenty of novices online who’ve given up and decided their best defense is an offense, and just spam attacks at you all day long.

Not Really a Knockout: This year’s version toggles off fighters’ health and stamina bars by default, and raises the possibility of a spontaneous knockout at all times in the game. These design choices definitely conform to the anything-can-happen quality of a live UFC fight, but in a video game, too many KOs come completely out of nowhere, at times that just don’t seem justified within that bout’s narrative – both for and against you. I also didn’t see much diversity in the knockout animations, which seemed to be mostly carry overs from last year.

Many will come to this game as complete beginners, either catching the mixed-martial arts wave, or because they heard about last year’s great game and want to give the latest one a shot. They need to know they’re in for something that is very much a sports game, moreso than being a straight fighter. If their intent is to fight other humans online, they should stay away from the Xbox 360 version until THQ addresses its multiplayer issues and sounds a definitive all-clear to gamers when they are resolved.

Despite its shortcomings, which range from some excusable less-than-cutting edge animations to the inexcusable multiplayer issues at launch, the heart of a truly great fighter is still present in UFC Undisputed 2010. Taking the time to understand it, to learn from it (or from others, as the Online Camps are meant to do), and to build up a fighting style, not just a set of attribute scores, can still deliver the thrills and fulfillment that made UFC 2009 Undisputed such a breakout hit.

UFC Undisputed 2010 was developed by Yuke’s Future Media Creators and published by THQ for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on May 25. Retails for $59.99 USD.
